Annual reports and other documents relating to Philadelphia’s water supply system, 1796-1941

See No. 3 below for a PDF of this report.

My ultimate goal is to eventually post a comprehensive list of all reports relating to Philadelphia’s water supply, from the late 18th century to the present, with links to PDFs of each. It may be a while before I complete that task, but in the meantime I want to share what I have either found online or scanned from the PWD Historical Collection. This page will expand as I am able to upload or link more volumes. For now, please view it as a work in progress.

Several sources of early reports (before 1850) are as follows:

Ogden Bound Volume

Some of the early reports in the PWD Historical Collection came from a bound volume compiled around 1876 by John L. Ogden, who was then an assistant engineer in the department. Ogden later served as Chief Engineer, from 1886 to 1895. The 29 reports are cataloged as 2004.057.0464a through 2004.057.0464cc, inclusive.

Historical Society of Pennsylvania

Other early reports in the PWD collection were duplicates given to PWD Chief Engineer John C. Trautwine Jr. in 1898 by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. These came in both original form or, where no originals existed, in typescripts. The nine typescripts are bound in one volume and catalogued as 2004.057.0567, a through i.

Early American Imprints, online newspaper databases, digitized copies of Hazard’s Register, Google Books, and the Internet Archive, also have copies of reports. In the many cases where there are duplicate reports online, I have tried to choose the best copy. Please be aware that Google Books does a lousy job when it comes to scanning illustrations, and mostly skips oversized maps and charts that are folded into the books.

For an overview of the history and operation of the city’s water system, you can view Walter Graf’s 1931 history of the city’s pumping stations. For more general information, see PWD’s 7-part Water and Drainage History Course.
