The second U.S. Navy ship to be named for Philadelphia, the USS Philadelphia was a 1240-ton, 36-gun sailing frigate built between 1798-99. The ship was entirely financed and built by the citizens of Philadelphia. She was burned by the U.S. Navy on February 16, 1804, after running aground during the First Barbary War.
