Subjects Construction

The art or process of building an item or a structure by assembling separate parts. Construction is often undertaken by a person or company other than the one who designed the finished product (see architecture or engineering). Therefore, inspection is necessary during the process to assure that the item is properly built. While such supervision is not so crucial to the making of a pencil, for example, it is essential to assure the proper completion of works such as sewer pipes, water mains, bridges, and buildings. The history of urban infrastructure is filled with stories about the life-threatening failures of large projects whose construction was proven to be faulty.
