Two views on the water supply, 1939
This special issue of The Nor'easter, a publication of the Northeast Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, focuses almost exclusively on the problem of Philadelphia's water supply. Lyle L. Jenne, in a shorter article, discusses how the pollution of the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers impacts the taste and odor of drinking water, even after it has gone through the filtration process. In a longer story, Isaac S. Walker gives an overview of the numerous water supply plans commissioned by the city, beginning in the 1860s and continuing up to the time of his writing, and advocates strongly for maintaining the current supply rather than seeking new sources upstate. He also insists that metering usage, and charging according to that use, is the only fair payment option for the more than 400,000 customers. You can find other articles and papers by Jenne, and a collection of photographs by Walker, by searching for their names in the Philadelphia Water Department Historical Collection online catalog.
