Two Frankford Creek Bridges, 1896-1899

Images from City Archives of Philadelphia

Between 1896 and 1899 two bridges over Frankford Creek, at Bridge Street and Orthodox Street, were rebuilt to facilitate the passage of small boats and barges up and down the creek. This work might have been in response to an 1882 Army Corps of Engineers report, calling for dredging and other improvements to the creek to improve navigation on the stream.

The photographs were copied in 2006 from an uncatalogued album of Public Works photos at City Archives. They were shot on slide film, which was scanned at 2212 dpi, with the resulting images adjusted in Photoshop for inclusion here. Most of the photographs have since been scanned directly, on a flatbed scanner, by the City Archives for inclusion on their PhillyHistory website.
