Wood truss drawbridge, Orthodox Street over Frankford Creek, 1899 [Detail]
Detail of a photo of an unidentified man wearing a badge and standing in front of the wood truss drawbridge over Frankford Creek at Orthodox Street, a part of the creek long since converted to a storm sewer.
Between 1896 and 1899 two bridges over Frankford Creek, at Bridge Street and Orthodox Street, were rebuilt to facilitate the passage of small boats and barges up and down the creek. This work might have been in response to an 1882 Army Corps of Engineers report, calling for dredging and other improvements to the creek for navigation purposes.
