Penn’s Treaty with the Indians (Watson’s Annals)

An engraving from Watson's Annals depicting the legendary 1682 Treaty of Shackamaxon between William Penn and his delegation and Tamanend, Chief of Chiefs of the Lenni-Lenape Nation.

Though it's historically likely that Penn did, in fact, sign a treaty pledging perpetual peace with the Lenni-Lenape, the details of this scene are apocryphal. The elm on the shore of the Delaware under which the meeting was purportedly held blew down in a storm in 1810, and a small obelisk was erected on the spot to commemorate the treaty in 1827. The land is now Penn Treaty Park, a small park in Fishtown overlooking the river and the Benjamin Franklin Bridge.
