Penn Landing at Blue Anchor, from Watson’s Annals
William Penn's landing party coming ashore at Philadelphia in 1682. The building behind the boat party, on the banks of the river, is the Blue Anchor Tavern, the first "tapper of strong drink" established in Philadelphia.
The original Blue Anchor building was demolished in 1828, and another tavern of the same name was built on the site some time later. This building stood into the 1920s, long enough to be photographed. The Korean War Memorial on Spruce Street now stands at the Blue Anchor's old location.
