South East Corner of Third and Market Streets, Philadelphia, 1800
The building in the center of this image was known as "Cooke's Folly," built around 1792 by Joseph Cooke, a jeweler and goldsmith. The ground floor featured the sort of shops we'd today call "high-end," and the upper floors housed elegant, luxurious apartments. Considered to be "too fine" for its age, it eventually fell into disrepair and was demolished around 1838.
