These gases while in the sludge, are under a hydrostatic pressure due to the depth of the tank, and when the sludge is withdrawn upon the drying bed the bubbles expand, lightening the mass and aiding in a separation of the water, which flows to the bottom and is carried away by the drains of the drying bed. This is shown in the accompanying illustration.
