Benezet House, Clarke’s Hall, and Chestnut St. Bridge (Watson’s Annals)
Anthony Benezet was a leading teacher and abolitionist of the 18th Century, educating Black children in his home on Chestnut St. from 1750-70 and opening a secondary school for girls in 1754. Clarke's Hall was the home of William Clarke, a wealthy attorney, and for a decade, beginning in 1790, housed the offices of the Treasury of the United States. It was demolished around 1840.
